We get this question all the time. The answer is, “it depends on the document.” Tax laws being what they are, there is no single rule of thumb that an individual or business owner can use. For that reason, the Massachusetts Society of CPAs has created a comprehensive document retention guide that has recommendations on how long a variety of tax documents should be kept stored.
